How to Exchange Safely

Safety Tips

• Meet safely and publicly. We do not recommend meeting at a place of residence.

• Plan the details of your exchange in advance.

• Do not unnecessarily share personal information.

• Do not leave any items being exchanged unattended.

• Consider the credibility and legitimacy of the listing (if it seems too good to be true, it likely is).

• We recommend confirming that the user you’re exchanging with is a member of the Michigan community by searching their name/email in MCommunity.

Recommended Safe Exchange Locations

Feel free to organize your exchange at one of our recommended safe exchange locations, where you can meet safely and publicly to physically exchange your item(s). Note that these locations are not directly involved in the transfer and will not hold exchanged items for any period of time; this is simply a place where you may organize your meetup if you’d like.

DPSS  Campus Safety Services Building, 1239 Kipke Dr, Ann Arbor

DPSS has a designated “Safe Exchange Zone” in the front lobby of the U-M Police Department in the Campus Safety Services Building and/or in the adjacent parking lot SC16, east of the Crisler Center. The Safe Exchange Zone is designated by clear signs and is well lit and camera-monitored at all hours of the day.

Maize & Blue Cupboard  420 State St, Ann Arbor

MBC is located in the basement of Betsy Barbour Residence Hall and you can enter via the entrance on Maynard. Meet up with your exchanger outside of MBC, or right inside the entrance. Operating hours are available on the website. It is not recommended to exchange outside of operating hours, as it may not be well populated or very well lit.
