I have an old hard hat that is in good shape.  I got it back in college years ago when I took a geology course and we took a field trip to a mine.  Maybe you could use it at work or when you go up in your attic to protect your head?  Maybe keep it with your emergency kit?

One thrift store passed on it.  I hate to throw it in the garbage.
