I'm looking for a used desktop computer or laptop to help out a friend who needs one mainly for basic web browsing.

It doesn't need to be new or fast. As long as the hardware is working, that's great. If the operating system is missing or no longer working, that's perfectly fine—I can install Linux on it.

If you have an older computer or laptop sitting around that you no longer need, I'd be happy to give it a useful second life.
