USA WEEKEND.COM: Greensmart - Waste not want not

2. Don’t just recycle. Freecycle!
The problem: Junk, junk, junk everywhere. And nowhere to put it but the landfill.
The solution: A communal approach that shows that one household’s junk is another’s salvation.
The “How-to” from Gurwitch: “The concept of ‘freecycling’ has exploded in recent years, especially with the website freecycle.org. You go there and type in where you live and what you need to get rid of — it could be a baby crib you no longer need or a set of old golf clubs. Once you’ve posted the availability of items, you could get dozens of responses from people near you who need them. Then, you put it on your curb and it’s gone! I worked with one woman who had a ceiling fan and aquarium to get rid of. She was ready to pay for a salvage company to pick them up. I steered her toward freecycling instead, and she got 20 responses in one day. And she was able to get baby clothes that she needed from a mom whose child had outgrown them. I have gotten rid of our child’s crayons and magic markers doing this — someone had a day-care business and needed them.”

Cary News: Town honors conservation volunteers

“Conserve, conserve, conserve,” said Predinger, a resident of the Beech Tree community near Weston Parkway.

Her unofficial motto stems from a desire to reduce waste and preserve the environment, she said. As part of her efforts to live “green,” Predinger said she is an active member of The Freecycle Network, located at freecycle.org. The nonprofit group provides members a forum through which they can donate or exchange goods for free with other people in their communities.

Appleton Post Crescent: Fox Valley thrift, resellers on edge over lead testing rules for ..

Word of the exemption for used items was good news to Janel Scott, of Grand Chute, who sells used children’s clothing online. Scott also serves as a local moderator for freecycle.com, a site established to reduce the flow of unwanted items into landfills by allowing people to offer goods at no charge to other members.

Scott said about half of the recent posts on freecycle.com cited worries the new law would make it illegal for them to distribute used children’s goods.

“They were having a fit over this,” she said. “They couldn’t believe it.”

Banco do Planeta: Muita coisa em casa? Que tal participar das redes de doação e trocas?

Filed under: Uncategorized, Big Time News, News Articles, Recycling Info, Brazil — Fiona @ 6:27 pm

Baseado nisto é que cresce no mundo todo o movimento “Free is Good”. Ele se baseia em redes de trocas e doação. Quem quer doar algo anuncia na rede - que se organiza por cidades - e quem precisa de algo também lança o chamado ali.

2. Cut corners

From the grocery store to your local mall, prices are increasing across the board. To cut your food shopping costs, go for store brands over name brands. The quality is the same, but you’ll cut costs significantly. Visit Web sites like coolsavings.com or valpak.com. And get a store card. This way you’ll get automatic discounts. And of course, never shop on an empty stomach - chances are you’ll be more vulnerable to temptations.

To avoid the markups at the mall, take advantage of local resources. Check out yardsalesearch.com to find sales in your area. You can also check out freecycle.com. This is an Internet-based group that links up people who are getting rid of stuff with people who want it. All of the items are given away for free.
