Frequently Asked Questions

A Quick Q&A to the New Freecycle Site - Zip Codes

Do you want all zip/postal codes in our area even if they crossover into other groups?

Yes, send all zip codes to Charlotte [chazztrons @ yahoo.com (scrunch it)]. Per Charlotte:

"I did one this morning over 200....so no worries. When I plug the zip code in if it covers more than one group it will list all groups. Please even if you are not going to move to the new site or if you are not adding Finder please send me your postal codes. If they are entered in to the database on the new site, then it will still list on the new site and refer people to the local Y!groups. The reason we are collecting zip codes is so that if someone enters in only a postal code on the main page, all groups who provided this code will pop up as an option for them to choose. If two cities use one postal code then they’ll have two choices which is fine, whether they are Yahoo Groups or directly on the new site.

Try to limit the codes to your immediate area as much as possible. Here is a site you can determine your local postal codes [for example: http://www.zip-codes.com/zip-code-radius-finder.asp]. Currently we are only collecting this info for the United States.

Where do we send zip codes?

SEND to: chazztrons @ yahoo.com (squoosh) In the following format, be sure to include your URL

We don't currently have a zip code requirement... but *if we did* how far of a radius would you want us to include?

We generally recommend directly within the city limits. The distance of radius depends if your group is rural or in a larger city. You’ll need to figure out what best reflects your actual group area.

How do we find all the zip codes within a certain radius?

Some lookup tools:

Do we have an approx time for when we can search by postcode for Aus groups?

Nope, not yet. Maybe in a month or so, say in June sometime?

But what about postal codes to find local groups?

A team is working on integrating postal code searches for all major countries. This will help people find the closest local group quickly. Once you have added finder@freecycle.org to your local group, please test to see if postal codes are working for you yet. If not, let us know in the OIDG group.
